Salute e Sviluppo, an NGO with many years of experience in design and management of socio-economic development projects, launched the three-year project in May 2014. “Promote the access to drinking water and basic sanitation for the population of Karungu Division, Kenya”, thanks to funding from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation Access to drinking water is a preliminary prerequisite condition, both for the effectiveness of health interventions and for local economic development. Lack of water causes a staggering unhealthy rate that causes disease and stops development. In Karungu people live below the poverty line. The proximity to Lake Victoria has fostered addiction to unhealty contaminated water In order to improve sanitation conditions of the local population, we have created a model of ozone water treatment never before implemented in Kenya, thus reducing the bacterial load in it.

The water system we have created is spread over a length of about 5 km and is divided into 5 water kiosks, managed by management groups at schools and meeting points. In addition, 48 basic sanitation facilities have been built in local primary and secondary schools. To raise the awareness of the local communities on the importance of using healthy water, we have also organized intense awareness campaigns and health education.

Thanks to the project:

• over 30,000 people can finally drink clean water
• more than 3.000 students have access to primary sanitation services
• over 25.000 people got to understand the importance and the rlationship between clean water and healty life.
